Top 10 Fixes For Theatre Festival Season Anxieties

Written by: Rachel Ganz

FULL DISCLOSURE: I AM NOT WORKING ON A FESTIVAL SHOW

It’s almost May.

The festivals are coming.

Either you are working on a show in a festival or you aren’t.  Either way, you’re scared.  Don’t worry.  Do these things:

1)  Rehearse

If you’re working on a show: rehearse that show

If you’re not working on a show: rehearse watching a show while drunk and then rehearse congratulating people while even drunker

2) Climb Mountains

If you’re working on a show: do it to stay fit because your show will demand the most of you

If you’re not working on a show: do it to find a cliff in case times get dark and you just feel like going to That Place.

3) Fall in Love

If you’re working on a show: do it so that you have an audience member ready and waiting to come to every performance

If you’re not working on a show: do it so you can have shame sex with someone who won’t judge you for having shame sex.

4) Cook

If you’re working on a show: do it to relax at the end of the day and celebrate your accomplishments

If you’re not working on a show: do it to eat your feelings and then do it to make the person who already fell in love with you (#3) also eat your feelings

5) Tell your mom your darkest secret

If you’re working on a show:  Do it to stay emotionally connected with yourself

If you’re not working on a show: Do it so that your mom feels bad for you for not putting on a show

6) Write something new (!)

If you’re working on a show:  Do it to inspire yourself to dig deeper into the text

If you’re not working on a show: Why aren’t you working on a show, this is why you’re not working on a show, because you don’t write shows, go write a show

7) See something new

If you’re working on a show:  Build a karmic audience base, let the company know you came and they’ll come out to support you

If you’re not working on a show:  Don’t be a bitter dick, just go see a show and applaud

8) Watch the Raptors(/Jays)

If you’re working on a show: Learn from the team’s athletic excellence

If you’re not working on a show:  Then why aren’t you already watching the Raptors(/Jays)?

9) Get outside, go to High Park, see the trees everyone is talking about

If you’re working on a show:  What a great way for the entire company to experience beauty together all at once

If you’re not working on a show:  Climb one of the trees and hide behind nature’s beauty until you’re ready to come out and contribute

10) Love yourself

If you’re working on a show: This is how you reach people

If you’re not working on a show: This is how you reach people
